Ramadan 2027 should fall in February and March, the coolest stretch of the Cairo travel season. Highs average 21 to 24 °C, and the museums are quiet in the morning.
The catch is time. Ministry museums shorten their hours, the city moves to the rhythm of the fast, and the hour before sunset is the worst time of day to be in a car. Here is what we know as of 20 October 2026, and how to plan a museum day around it.
The quick answer
Ramadan 2027 is expected to run from Monday 8 February to Tuesday 9 March, with Eid al-Fitr on about 10 March (astronomical estimate; Egypt's Dar al-Ifta confirms after the moon sighting). The Egyptian Museum at Tahrir and NMEC open 9:00 to 16:00 in Ramadan, with the ticket window closing at 15:00. The GEM closes at 16:00 too. Visit in the morning, and be off the road before iftar, around 17:35 to 18:00.
When is Ramadan 2027 in Egypt?
Expected from Monday 8 February to Tuesday 9 March 2027, with Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday 10 March. These are astronomical estimates.
The Islamic calendar follows the moon, so Ramadan comes about 11 days earlier each year. For 1448 AH, astronomical calculations reported by Egypt Telegraph in October 2026 put the first day of Ramadan in Egypt on Monday 8 February 2027 and Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday 10 March. The article stresses that the date stays an estimate until Dar al-Ifta, Egypt's religious authority, announces the result of the moon sighting.
In practice a shift of one day is possible at either end. Book flights and tours with free cancellation, and recheck a week before.
| Event | Expected date in Egypt | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Moon sighting for Ramadan | Evening of 7 February 2027 | Dar al-Ifta announces |
| First day of Ramadan | Monday 8 February 2027 | May shift by a day |
| Last day of Ramadan | Tuesday 9 March 2027 | 29 or 30 days |
| Eid al-Fitr | Wednesday 10 March 2027 | Holiday lasts several days |
What are the Egyptian Museum's hours during Ramadan?
9:00 to 16:00, with the ticket window closing at 15:00. NMEC keeps the same Ramadan hours, and the GEM also closes at 16:00.
The Ministry's page for the Egyptian Museum gives Ramadan hours of 9:00 to 16:00, with tickets until 15:00, against 9:00 to 17:00 the rest of the year. The NMEC page shows the same Ramadan hours. NMEC usually opens in the evening too, from 18:00 to 21:00, but the Ministry does not list Ramadan evening hours, so do not count on them.
The GEM moves its galleries to 9:00 to 16:00 in Ramadan, as the museum announced when it set its current hours in January 2025. Whether the Wednesday and Saturday evening sessions run during Ramadan 2027 is not published yet; the time slots on tickets.gem.eg will show it. Ticket prices do not change for Ramadan.
| Museum | Normal hours | Ramadan hours | Last tickets in Ramadan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Egyptian Museum (Tahrir) | 9:00 to 17:00 | 9:00 to 16:00 | 15:00 |
| NMEC (Fustat) | 9:00 to 17:00, evenings 18:00 to 21:00 | 9:00 to 16:00 | 15:00 |
| GEM (Giza) | 9:00 to 18:00, Wed and Sat to 21:00 | 9:00 to 16:00 | See tickets.gem.eg |
How does iftar change Cairo's traffic?
The hour before sunset is gridlock as the whole city heads home to break the fast. During iftar itself the streets go almost empty.
Sunset in Cairo moves from about 17:36 on 8 February to about 17:59 on 9 March 2027 (our calculation for Tahrir Square; Egypt does not use summer time until late April). Offices close early in Ramadan, and from mid afternoon everyone is trying to get home before the call to prayer. Tahrir sits on the busiest crossing in town.
Then, for about an hour after sunset, Cairo stops. Drivers eat, roads clear, and it is the easiest moment of the day to cross the city. After that the night picks up: cafés, sweets, family outings and late shopping, often until well after midnight.
The plan that works: museum at 9:00, lunch at your hotel or a tourist restaurant, and back before 15:30. Our guide on getting to the Egyptian Museum covers the Sadat metro stop, which beats any car at rush hour.
| Time | What Cairo is like | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00 to 12:00 | Quiet streets, quiet galleries | Museum visit |
| 12:00 to 15:00 | Normal traffic | Second sight or lunch |
| 15:00 to sunset | Heavy traffic, everyone heading home | Stay put or take the metro |
| Sunset and the hour after | Streets almost empty | Iftar, or an easy taxi ride |
| Late evening | Busy, festive | Khan el-Khalili, a walk downtown |

Do tours to the Egyptian Museum run during Ramadan?
Yes. Private tours run as usual but start early and fit the museum inside the 9:00 to 15:00 ticket window. Long combo days get tight.
Most museum tours on this site start at 8:00 or 9:00 with hotel pickup, which suits Ramadan well. The private half-day tour fits easily: about three hours inside, back at your hotel by early afternoon. The US$15 half-day transfer works too, though that price covers the car; the ticket and guide are options.
Full days are harder. The museum, Citadel and Old Cairo day runs about eight hours and includes lunch. In Ramadan it means a drive across town in the afternoon rush. Ask the operator when they plan to finish, and whether lunch is served as normal; tourist restaurants stay open by day, but a guide who is fasting will not eat with you.
Be generous with patience and with tips. Your guide and driver may have had nothing to eat or drink since before dawn.
| Tour | Length | Ramadan fit |
|---|---|---|
| Private half-day with Egyptologist (US$65) | 4 hours | Easy, done by early afternoon |
| Half-day transfer (from US$15) | 4 hours | Easy, car only at the from-price |
| Museum, NMEC, Citadel, Coptic Cairo (US$50) | 7 to 8 hours | Tight: two museums before 15:00 |
| Museum, Citadel and Old Cairo (US$147) | 8 hours | Ask about the finish time |

Pickup, a private Egyptologist and the ticket at Tahrir, done well before the afternoon rush.

Usually yes, with normal hours, but expect Egyptian families in big numbers. Eid 2027 should start on about 10 March.
The Egyptian Museum has stayed open over past Eid holidays, Egypt Today reported, and the Ministry usually confirms holiday hours a few days ahead. Eid al-Fitr is a public holiday of several days. Families head out to parks, the Nile and museums.
For a foreign visitor, the first morning of Eid is quiet while people pray and visit relatives. From the afternoon on, Tahrir, the GEM and NMEC fill with local visitors. Go early, and book the GEM's timed slots as soon as your date is fixed.

What should you know before visiting Cairo in Ramadan?
Eat and drink discreetly in public during the day, pay by card at the museums, and keep your evenings free.
Non-Muslim visitors are not expected to fast. Hotels and tourist restaurants serve food in daylight. Eating or smoking in the street by day is poor form; keep it indoors. Carry water, drink it out of sight, and dress modestly, which you would at the museum anyway.
Payment does not change: the Egyptian Museum is card only, and cash will not get you in. Our ticket guide lists every price.
Most of all, use the nights. Khan el-Khalili and the old city around al-Hussein are at their best after iftar, hung with lanterns and full of families. We would plan a slow afternoon at the hotel and a late evening walk rather than squeezing in a third sight before sunset.
