Tahrir or the GEM?

Two museums, 25 km apart: the 1902 original downtown and the giant new one by the pyramids. Tutankhamun lives at the second now. The first still has things the new one doesn't.

Until October 2025 the answer was easy: Tutankhamun's gold mask was on Tahrir Square, so everyone went there. Then the mask moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza, which opened in November 2025. Many tour listings and older blogs haven't caught up.

Here is what moved, what stayed, and how to choose. If you have the time, the honest answer is both, on the same day or on two.

The quick answer

Pick the GEM if Tutankhamun is the reason you came: the gold mask and his complete burial are there now, for 1,570 EGP (1,830 EGP from 1 November 2026), booked online. Pick Tahrir for the Old Kingdom statues, the Tanis gold and a quieter, cheaper visit at 550 EGP. Both in one day works if you start at Tahrir at 9 am.

Is Tutankhamun's mask still in the Egyptian Museum?

No. The Tutankhamun hall at Tahrir closed on 20 October 2025, and the gold mask and coffins moved to the GEM before its inauguration on 1 November 2025.

The move happened in stages over several years. By June 2025 only 26 Tutankhamun objects were left at Tahrir: the mask, the innermost gold coffin, a gilded coffin, the gold dagger and a few more. The Ministry closed the hall on 20 October 2025 to pack them, Egypt Today reported, while the rest of the museum stayed open.

The GEM was formally inaugurated on 1 November 2025 and opened to the public on 4 November, the anniversary of the tomb's discovery. For the first time, all of the boy king's 5,000 or so objects are shown together. Read more on the year since in one year after Tutankhamun left Tahrir.

What moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum, and what stayed?

Tutankhamun's treasures and a few hundred other pieces moved. Around 170,000 objects stayed at Tahrir, including the Narmer Palette, Khafre, Rahotep and Nofret, and the Tanis gold.

Some other pieces did travel to Giza in batches: a sandstone statue of Akhenaten, for example. Queen Hetepheres' furniture and at least one of Menkaure's triads seem to have gone too, so don't plan a trip around them at Tahrir. One GEM blogger summed up the scale: if Tahrir is a bucket of water, the GEM took about an espresso cup.

Two things you won't find in either museum: Khufu's solar boat was never at Tahrir (it came from the old boat museum at Giza), and the royal mummies have been at NMEC since 2021. See where the royal mummies are.

How do the ticket prices compare in 2026?

Tahrir costs 550 EGP for a foreign adult. The GEM costs 1,570 EGP until 31 October 2026 and 1,830 EGP from 1 November 2026. NMEC costs 550 EGP.

Which is better: the Egyptian Museum or the GEM?

For a first visit with one museum slot, the GEM. For a second museum, for ancient art lovers, or for anyone who hates crowds, Tahrir.

Go to the GEM if:

  • Tutankhamun is on your list. This is not negotiable: the mask is there.
  • You want modern galleries, air conditioning and step-free access.
  • You are staying near the pyramids anyway.

Go to Tahrir if:

  • You love the Old Kingdom. The Narmer Palette, Djoser's statue, Khafre and Rahotep and Nofret are here.
  • You want royal gold without the crowds: the Tanis room has the gold mask of Psusennes I and his silver coffin.
  • You like old museums. The 1902 building, with its wooden cases and dusty corners, is an exhibit in itself.
  • You want quiet: 1,000 to 2,000 visitors a day against up to 18,000 at the GEM on peak days.

A guest on the private Tahrir tour wrote in January 2026: "Even if you have seen the GEM, this museum is well worth a visit." We agree.

The new museum is built for scale: big halls, big light, big crowds.

Can you visit the Egyptian Museum and the GEM in one day?

Yes. Start at Tahrir at 9 am, leave by noon, and drive 30 to 45 minutes to the GEM for the afternoon. Book the GEM slot online first.

The GEM is about 20 to 25 km from Tahrir by road. An Uber or Careem costs roughly 150 to 250 EGP outside rush hour. The GEM is open from 9 am to 6 pm and until 9 pm on Wednesday and Saturday, so on those days you can take the afternoon slowly and finish there in the evening.

It is a long day. Two museums of this size will tire anyone; give Tahrir two to three hours and the GEM at least three. If you can, split them over two days and pair the GEM with the pyramids, which are next door. The pyramids and GEM day does exactly that, with tickets and lunch included.

Which order: the GEM first or Tahrir first?

Tahrir first, then the GEM. Seeing the Old Kingdom and Tanis before Tutankhamun makes the story run in order, and Tahrir is quietest at opening.

Tahrir's ground floor runs roughly in time order, from the Narmer Palette to the Late Period. Do that first and the GEM's Tutankhamun galleries land as the high point rather than the opening act. It also avoids driving into downtown Cairo in the late afternoon, when the roads around Tahrir are at their worst.

Many guests do it the other way round, on separate days: pyramids and GEM one day, Tahrir with the Citadel or NMEC on another. One reviewer had the right warning for both orders: "make sure you know what museum you’re going to as we learned there was the old and the new museum."

The GEM is a short drive from these. Tahrir is across the river, downtown.

Who should skip the Egyptian Museum?

Travellers with one museum slot who came for Tutankhamun, anyone who wants the royal mummies (they are at NMEC), and visitors who need fully air-conditioned, step-free galleries.

Tahrir is old-fashioned. The ground floor was relit and relabelled in 2025, but The National found ventilation, lighting and electrics still needing work, and the upper floor gets warm in summer. Labels are uneven. If that sounds tiring rather than charming, the GEM is the better day out.

If you are on the fence, do Tahrir with a guide: the old museum rewards someone who knows where to look. What to see at Tahrir now has a self-guided route.

Not sure? A half day at Tahrir with a private Egyptologist, pickup and ticket included, cancels free up to 24 hours before.
