The Egyptian Museum is on Midan el-Tahrir, a few hundred metres from the Nile. The metro stops underneath the square, Uber and Careem drop at the gate, and most downtown hotels are a walk away.
From Giza, Zamalek or the airport, it takes more planning. Here is every option with 2026 fares, and how to fold the museum into a day with the Citadel, Coptic Cairo, Khan el-Khalili or NMEC.
The quick answer
Take the metro to Sadat, the interchange of Lines 1 and 2 under Tahrir Square: 10 EGP for up to nine stations since 27 March 2026. Or take Uber or Careem to the museum gate on the north side of the square. From Giza hotels allow 40 to 60 minutes by car. From the airport, 40 to 75 minutes. Ignore anyone who says the museum is closed: it opens daily, 9 am to 5 pm.

Which metro station is closest to the Egyptian Museum?
Sadat, on Lines 1 and 2, directly under Tahrir Square. From the exit it is a few minutes' walk to the museum gate.
Sadat is the main interchange downtown, and some maps list it under Line 1 only. It serves both. Follow the signs for the Egyptian Museum and you surface on the north side of the square, near the gate. The museum's red building is hard to miss.
Women-only carriages run in the middle of each train. Morning and late-afternoon rush hours are packed; mid-morning is fine.

How much is the Cairo metro in 2026?
10 EGP for up to nine stations, 12 EGP up to 16, 15 EGP up to 23 and 20 EGP beyond. The new fares started on 27 March 2026.
Fares from Egyptian Streets, 27 March 2026. Buy a single ticket at the window (cash) and keep it: you need it to exit. A metro ride to the museum costs less than a fiftieth of the 550 EGP entry ticket.
| Journey | Stations | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 9 stations | e.g. Giza (Line 2) to Sadat | 10 EGP |
| Up to 16 stations | Longer cross-town trips | 12 EGP |
| Up to 23 stations | Outer districts | 15 EGP |
| Over 23 stations | End to end | 20 EGP |
Is Uber or Careem the easiest way to the Egyptian Museum?
For most visitors, yes. Both work well in Cairo, show the fare before you ride, and can drop you at the gate on Meret Basha Street.
Set the destination as "The Egyptian Museum, Tahrir" and ask to be dropped at the main gate on the north side of the square, not on the square itself, where traffic doesn't stop. inDrive works too. White taxis use meters, in theory; agree the fare first if the driver won't turn it on.
Parking near the museum is very limited, so if you are driving, the underground garage by the Omar Makram mosque on the square is the usual option. Better not to drive.
Skip the haggling: a private car from your hotel to the museum gate and back, from $15.

By Uber or a private car: about 20 km, 40 to 60 minutes. The metro works if your hotel is near Giza station on Line 2, but not from the pyramids area.
Hotels by the pyramids are a long way from any metro station. A car is simplest; budget the drive at both ends of the day, since the roads into downtown slow down sharply after 2 pm. From hotels near Giza Square or Dokki, Line 2 runs straight to Sadat in about six stops for 10 EGP.
If you are staying in Giza and want both the pyramids and Tahrir, the pyramids and museum day picks you up, does the plateau in the morning and the museum after. Guide and tickets are options there, so check what you add.

By Uber, Careem or a pre-booked car: about 22 km, 40 to 75 minutes depending on traffic. Uber quotes from about 200 to 320 EGP.
Uber and Careem both pick up at Cairo International, with a fixed fare in the app; AirConnect puts the ride to downtown at roughly EGP 200 to 320. Drop your luggage at the hotel first: anything over 40 by 40 cm has to be checked into the museum cloakroom.
Arriving in the morning with a late flight out? Tahrir is a good first or last stop, since it is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm and needs no advance booking.
How do you combine the museum with the Citadel, Coptic Cairo or NMEC?
Start at Tahrir at 9 am. Coptic Cairo is four metro stops south on Line 1 (Mar Girgis). NMEC is 15 to 30 minutes by car. The Citadel and Khan el-Khalili are 10 to 20 minutes by car.
| From Tahrir to | Distance | How | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khan el-Khalili | About 3 km | Uber or taxi | 10 to 20 min |
| Coptic Cairo | About 5 km | Metro Line 1 to Mar Girgis | About 15 min |
| NMEC (royal mummies) | About 7 km by road | Uber | 15 to 30 min |
| The Citadel | About 4 km | Uber or taxi | 15 to 25 min |
| The GEM | 20 to 25 km | Uber or tour | 30 to 45 min |
Distances are straight-line or road estimates; times are outside rush hour. A combo tour saves the logistics: the Egyptian Museum and NMEC day adds the mummies, the Citadel and Coptic Cairo, and the all-in Old Cairo day includes every ticket and lunch. For the mummies, read where the royal mummies are first.

Is the "museum is closed" tout telling the truth?
No. The museum opens every day, 9 am to 5 pm. A stranger who says it is closed wants to take you to a shop.
The script is always similar: a friendly man near Sadat station or on the square says the museum is closed today, for prayers, a holiday or a VIP visit, and offers to show you a papyrus or perfume shop "while you wait". Travel writers at In Your Pocket list it among Egypt's most common scams.
- Check the hours yourself on the Ministry's page.
- Walk straight to the gate. If it really were closed, you would see it.
- Don't accept a free guided walk. It ends in a shop or a request for money.
- Tahrir is heavily policed and safe by day; the problem is hassle, not danger.
Meet your driver in the hotel lobby and get dropped at the gate: no touts, no haggling.

The Nile corniche and Qasr el-Nil bridge, downtown's old streets, the Ritz-Carlton and Ramses Hilton, and Zamalek across the river.
Walk west from the museum and you reach the corniche in a few minutes. Cross Qasr el-Nil bridge, with its bronze lions, for the Cairo Tower and the cafes of Zamalek. Downtown's belle-epoque streets, around Talaat Harb, start just east of the square.
At sunset, the river is the best place to be: a felucca ride from the corniche is the classic end to a museum day. And if you want to see what moved from here, the Tahrir or the GEM guide covers the trip to Giza.
