Private Half-Day Egyptian Museum Tour

About this experience

This is the tour most people imagine when they type "Egyptian Museum guided tour". A minivan picks you up, a licensed Egyptologist meets you, and the two of you (or your family) walk the museum for about three hours before the drive back. The listing allows 45 minutes for the transfer and three hours inside. Unlike the cheaper listings here, the entry ticket is included: that's 550 EGP per foreign adult in 2026, paid by card only at the door, so having the guide handle it saves a small hassle.

Be clear about what you will see. Tutankhamun's gold mask is no longer here. The Tut hall at Tahrir closed on 20 October 2025 and the mask and coffins moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. The 22 royal mummies left for NMEC in April 2021, so the listing's line about "Entrance fees for the Mummy Room" is out of date: that room is gone. A good guide spends the time on what stayed, and that is a lot. The Narmer Palette, King Djoser, Khafre on his throne, Rahotep and Nofret, the gold mask and silver coffin of Psusennes I from Tanis, and the burial of Yuya and Thuya are all on show. Our highlights guide lists what is still here.

Some guests report a shorter visit than promised. One wrote that they were done in about two hours and then steered to an essential-oils shop. That's the old Cairo habit, not the tour, and you can stop it with one sentence at the start (see the tips). For everything else, the reviews are about the guides, by name, and they are warm.

  • A private, licensed Egyptologist for about three hours
  • The 550 EGP entry ticket included, so no card queue at the window
  • Pickup from your hotel, a station or a home address, then the drive back
  • The Old Kingdom rooms and the Tanis gold, at your pace
  • Wheelchair accessible, according to the listing, including the vehicle

What guests say

★★★★★

We had a wonderful guide, Hassan Ghanem, for our visit to the old Egyptian Museum. He is an Egyptologist, and his knowledge and love of his subject really added to our experience. Even if you have seen the GEM, this museum is well worth a visit.

Warm, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable, Miss Nevin brought ancient Egypt to life with her engaging and detailed storytelling. [...] never rushing us, always checking in to make sure we had time to take photos, wander a bit, or just absorb the magic of the place on our own.

We were glad to learn we were going to the older museum [...] The building had a lot of character and charm as well as several great exhibits.

Tips before you book

  • Say at pickup that you don't want shop stops. One guest was taken to an essential-oils shop after the museum; a polite no at the start avoids it.
  • Start at 9 am if you can. Coach groups arrive mid-morning, and the museum is busiest from about 11 am to 2 pm.
  • Phone photos are free; flash and tripods are not allowed. Big cameras may need a paid permit.
  • Bring water and dress light: the museum is only partly air-conditioned, and upstairs gets warm from May to October.
  • Tip in cash. Egyptian pounds are best; the ticket window itself takes cards only.

Frequently asked questions

Is the entry ticket included in the Deluxe Tours Egypt museum tour?

Yes. The listing includes the entry fee to the Egyptian Museum, which is 550 EGP for foreign adults and 275 EGP for students in 2026, under-6s free. The only excluded ticket is for a "Mummy Room" that no longer exists at Tahrir.

Will I see Tutankhamun's mask on this tour?

No. The mask and coffins moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum in late October 2025, before its 1 November 2025 inauguration. At Tahrir you see the gold mask of Psusennes I from Tanis instead. Our Tahrir vs GEM guide explains the split.

How long is the private Egyptian Museum tour?

About four hours door to door: three hours inside the museum and the transfer each way. The museum is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, and the ticket window closes at 4 pm, per the Ministry's museum page.

Can children join?

Yes, with an adult. Viator charges a child rate for ages 4 to 11 and adult prices from 12. Under-3s count as infants. At the museum door, children under 6 enter free.
