Booking choice: The pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum day, from $185 per person. Check dates Tour details
On 18 October 2026 Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced new ticket prices for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza, the museum that has shown Tutankhamun's gold mask since November 2025. They apply from 1 November 2026. The foreign adult ticket goes from 1,570 to 1,830 Egyptian pounds, a rise of about 16.6%, as reported by Egypt Independent and Cairoscene.
Nothing changes at the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, which this site covers. That makes the gap between Cairo's two big museums wider, and it is worth knowing before you plan a museum day.
The quick answer
From 1 November 2026 a foreign adult pays 1,830 EGP at the Grand Egyptian Museum (was 1,570), and a foreign student or child 920 EGP (was 790). The Egyptian Museum at Tahrir stays at 550 EGP and NMEC at 550 EGP. Foreigners buy GEM tickets online for a timed slot, and the only official shop is visit-gem.com, which forwards to tickets.gem.eg.
How much does the Grand Egyptian Museum cost from 1 November 2026?
1,830 EGP for a foreign adult and 920 EGP for a foreign student or child. Foreign residents of Egypt pay 920 EGP, or 460 EGP as students and children.
The new list covers every category. Egyptians see a 10% rise, foreigners about 16.6%. Arab visitors pay the same as other foreigners at the GEM, which is why the official tables say "Arab and foreign". Children under six get in free, according to the GEM's ticketing site.
At about 52 pounds to the US dollar (the rate in mid October 2026, per Pound Sterling Live), the new adult ticket is roughly US$35, against roughly US$30 now. Arabic-language coverage put it the same way: about five dollars more for foreigners. The pound moves, so treat the dollar figures as a guide.
| Ticket (GEM) | Until 31 Oct 2026 | From 1 Nov 2026 |

Why is the GEM raising prices now?
The Ministry gave no long explanation. The rise follows a first year in which the GEM drew about four million visitors.
The GEM was formally inaugurated on 1 November 2025 and opened to the public on 4 November. Between then and August 2026 it "received around four million people", with foreigners making up 60% of them, according to museum CEO Ahmed Ghoneim, quoted by Cairoscene. The new prices take effect on the first anniversary of the opening.
A year ago Ghoneim had promised no rise for Egyptians at the opening and only a small one for foreigners. That held for a year. Our read: demand is high, most foreign visitors come for Tutankhamun anyway, and a 260-pound rise will not change many itineraries.
How do the Egyptian Museum and NMEC compare on price?
Both charge 550 EGP for a foreign adult, a third of the new GEM price. NMEC plans its own rise from 1 April 2027, amount not yet set.
The Ministry lists the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir at 550 EGP for foreign adults and 275 EGP for foreign students, card only, open daily from 9:00 to 17:00. No change has been announced. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, home of the royal mummies since 2021, charges 550 EGP and 300 EGP for students, with the mummy hall included.
NMEC's board approved higher prices from 1 April 2027 at a meeting on 20 September 2026, but Egypt Independent reported that the new amounts "have not yet been determined". If you are in Cairo before April, today's price applies.
What you get for the money is different at each. The GEM has the complete Tutankhamun collection. Tahrir has the Narmer Palette, the Old Kingdom statues and the Tanis gold. NMEC has the pharaohs themselves. Our Egyptian Museum vs GEM guide goes through it room by room.
| Museum | Foreign adult | Foreign student | Change ahead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Egyptian Museum (Giza) | 1,830 EGP from 1 Nov | 920 EGP | Rise on 1 Nov 2026 |
| Egyptian Museum (Tahrir) | 550 EGP | 275 EGP | None announced |
| NMEC (Fustat) | 550 EGP | 300 EGP | Rise from 1 Apr 2027, amount not set |

Where do you buy GEM tickets, and how do you spot a fake site?
Only on the GEM's own site: visit-gem.com, which forwards to tickets.gem.eg. Foreigners book online for a timed entry slot.
Foreign visitors cannot just turn up and pay at the GEM: tickets are sold online with an entry time. Type the address yourself rather than clicking an ad. When we checked on 20 October 2026, visit-gem.com redirected to tickets.gem.eg, which lists the hours: galleries from 9:00 to 18:00, and to 21:00 on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with last entry an hour before closing.
Fakes are a real problem. On 23 May 2026 the museum warned about websites and social media pages that promise fast bookings or cheap tickets and then harvest card details. More than 50 fraudulent sites had been taken down by then, Egyptian Streets reported. Red flags: a discount on the official price, a domain that is not gem.eg or visit-gem.com, and payment through a messaging app.
A tour with the ticket included is the other safe route. Memphis Tours' pyramids and GEM day includes both entry fees, an Egyptologist and lunch.
| Day | GEM galleries | Last entry |
|---|---|---|
| Sun, Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri | 9:00 to 18:00 | 17:00 |
| Wed and Sat | 9:00 to 21:00 | 20:00 |
| Ramadan (expected 8 Feb to 9 Mar 2027) | 9:00 to 16:00 | Check tickets.gem.eg |

Tutankhamun's mask and the pyramids in one private day, with both entry tickets, an Egyptologist and lunch in the price.
Explore the pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum day Tour detailsShould you book before 1 November?
If your visit is before 1 November, you pay 1,570 EGP. For a visit after that, expect the checkout to show 1,830 EGP.
The announcement talks about prices "starting November 1". It does not say whether a ticket bought in October for a November date keeps the old price, and the GEM has not said so on its ticketing site. The total on tickets.gem.eg at checkout is the one that counts. Do not buy from a reseller promising to lock in the old rate.
For tours, the price is the operator's. A tour that includes the GEM ticket may raise its from-price after 1 November or absorb the change; check the listing on the day you book. The budget transfers on this site that go only to Tahrir are not affected.
Is the GEM still worth it at 1,830 pounds?
Yes, if Tutankhamun is the reason you came to Egypt. If you have time for two museums, add Tahrir at 550 EGP for the Old Kingdom and the Tanis gold.
The GEM is the only place to see the gold mask, the coffins and more than 5,000 Tutankhamun objects together. Nothing at Tahrir or NMEC replaces that.
Tahrir is the bargain. For 550 EGP you get the Narmer Palette, Khafre enthroned, Rahotep and Nofret, the silver coffin of Psusennes I and quiet galleries. A private half-day with an Egyptologist covers the ticket for US$65. Our Egyptian Museum ticket guide has every category and the card-only rule.
| Plan (foreign adult) | Tickets from 1 Nov 2026 | Roughly in US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Tahrir only | 550 EGP | $11 |
| Tahrir and NMEC | 1,100 EGP | $21 |
| GEM only | 1,830 EGP | $35 |
| Tahrir and GEM | 2,380 EGP | $46 |
| Tahrir, NMEC and GEM | 2,930 EGP | $56 |
